Silk For Everyday

What Is Raw Silk?

Raw silk noil is a textured, nubby fabric made from shorter silk fibers as compared to long-strand fibers used to make smooth satin-like silks. Unlike smooth, lustrous silk, raw silk noil has a matte finish, a soft nubby texture, and a more casual, organic look. Raw silk noil is similar to linen and cotton, however it uses much less water to produce and improves the health of hair and skin.

Our un-dyed raw silk noil retains a high content of sericin (the natural outer protein coating found in silk), making it a great fabric for hair and skin care products like towels and wraps.

Raw silk noil is extremely breathable with temperature-regulating properties, and machine wash and dry friendly, making it suitable to wear in any climate and for travel.

Raw Silk Noil

100% Silk

Raw Silk Noil is a beautifully textured, all-natural silk with a soft, nubby feel. Unlike traditional shiny silk, it has a matte finish and a cozy, lightweight drape. It is made by drawing 100% silk strands directly from the cocoon without any combing or straightening, which adds to the unique texture of the fabric.

Why We Love It:

  • Breathable, Hypoallergenic, and suitable to wear in any climate: hot or cold.
  • Machine wash and dry friendly, becomes even softer with time.
  • Comparable to Linen but uses less water to produce and does not sag or stretch by end of day.
  • Our Natural un-dyed silk retains the most sericin and fibroin, providing healing and anti-aging benefits for skin and hair.

How To Care For Raw Silk Noil?

Machine Wash Cold

  • Wash with cold water on a delicate cycle along with other soft garments that do not have zippers or hardware.
  • Wash with like colors.
  • Use gentle silk-friendly detergent without bleach or stain removing solvents.

Tumble Dry Low

  • Tumble dry on a low heat setting together with other soft garments that do not have zippers or hardware.
  • Remove promptly to avoid setting any wrinkles.

Please note: repeated washing and drying will give more texture to the silk. If you prefer to retain the original smoothness you may opt to eco-dryclean your piece.

Time is Luxury. We do not recommend hand washing and air drying raw silk as it will become stiff. You may steam iron your silk on a medium heat setting to revive softness and remove any wrinkles.

FAQs About Washed Silk

Is raw silk noil rough?

No. Our raw silk noil has a nubby texture but is not rough on the skin. It has a soft hand and comfortable medium weight with a beautiful drape. Compared to linen, it is less stiff and it doesn't sag by the end of the day. Raw silk is hypoallergenic and suitable for sensitive skin.

Does washing the raw silk weaken it?

No. There are two proteins present in silk that give it molecular strength: sericin and fibroin. Sericin is an outer gummy coating with many health benefits (we use raw silk with high sericin content for our beauty accessories). Fibroin is the core protein that makes up the structural integrity of the silk. With repeated washing at home the sericin layer may slightly wash away, but the fibroin will stay strong and in-tact. Raw silk will retain it's durable structure and last for years to come.

Is raw silk eco-friendly?

Yes! Silk naturally involves much less water to produce compared to other natural fibers such as linen or cotton. It also does not need any harsh neuro-toxic chemicals to produce like Tencel, Modal, Rayon, or bamboo silk alternatives. In our opinion, silk is one of the most eco-conscious fabrics on the planet.
